More About This Scavenger Artist & The YE Water Program
Pak Haris lives in the slums of Tanjung Priok and makes the Travel Bag. The scavenged trash is purchased, washed, cut, and collaged
into these beautiful works of functional art. Pak Haris is somewhat of an entrepreneur. He is greatly admired in his village.
The location in northeast Jakarta referred to as Tanjung Priok is home to a kampung community of approximately 60 families.
This community is not government recognized, an "unofficial" neighborhood made up of people that do not have identification cards.
Most of the residents are unemployed. Some do construction work they may periodically find, and others scavenge trash.
Most of the children do not go to school because they cannot afford the cost.
The majority of residents have lived in Tanjung Priok for 20 years, and YE has been working with them for more than one year.
This is a swampy area that often floods, over 1m at times. There are wooden walkways made to cover some of the constantly
muddy paths. Indeed, there are several reported cases of Dengue Fever and Malaria. Some have tried to dig septic
pits but have instead created cesspools next to their homes because the pits fill with water and sewage. The two existing toilet
structures that were constructed 15 years ago, serve over 100 people. Raw sewage drains directly into puddles behind the outhouse.
YE Water Program runs an Orphanage Home, a Baby Home, an Outreach Program, Health Services & Mobile Clinic, a Food Rescue Program
and The Water Program. Monsoon Vermont® collaborates with YE to support the Water Program to generate a resourceful livelihood for the poor
in Indonesia and an environmental awareness in USA. Monsoon Vermont® works to create different channels of interest for alternative uses for rubbish materials.
